Everything is new in the all-new Passat.

This was evident during the launch of the 8th generation Passat, which offered journalists the experience to drive from the Boardwalk Hotel towards the Frontier Country, then turned east to the Sunshine Coast, lunched at Oceana Beach & Wildlife Reserve, before returning to the Friendly City.

Whether these journos hail from the Friendly City or not, the Passat brought a smile to many a face as it offered an all-new driving experience.

An eye on road and data

The all-new Passat is the first Volkswagen to be equipped (as an option) with a head-up display which projects key information like vehicle speed or navigation pictograms directly into the driver’s primary visual field. This means a driver can keep an eye on the road whilst checking data such as speed.

It is also the first Volkswagen equipped with an active info display, which replaces the instrument cluster with a fully configurable interactive 12.3 inch display screen.

Adapt to traffic flow

Another exciting Passat gadget is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). This means that the Passat maintains a preselected speed; and a defined distance from the vehicle ahead; and it automatically brakes or accelerates depending on what the flow of traffic is. This is possible owing to a radar sensor integrated in the front of the car

ACC operates over a speed range from 30 to 160 km/h with a manual gearbox and with DSG. In vehicles with DSG, the optional ACC intervenes to such an extent that the car may be slowed to a standstill, depending on the situation.

It may also automatically pull away in stop-and-go traffic. ACC maintains a preselected speed and a defined distance from the vehicle ahead, and it automatically brakes or accelerates in flowing traffic.

The system dynamics can be individually varied by selecting one of the driving programmes from the driver profile selector.

Europe’s Car of 2015

The first Passat was launched in 1973 and it has racked up over 22 million sales worldwide prior to the 8th generation hitting the road. This premium and business sedan was announced the coveted winner of the 2015 European Car of the Year award.

New standards set

The Passat sets new standards with an unladen weight that has been reduced by up to 85kg and fuel economy figures that have been improved by up to 14%.

At a length of 4 767mm, the new Passat is 2mm shorter than the previous model, whilst the wheelbase is 79mm longer at 2 791mm. Therefore the body overhangs are significantly shorter. It is 14mm lower at 1 456mm and 12mm wider at 1 832mm.

Interior improvements

The interior has been developed to match the sophisticated exterior of the eighth-generation Passat. Interior space is improved, with more leg- and head-room, as well as increased luggage space.

“Let me park myself...”

The newly developed Park Assist includes an option for the car to park itself forwards into perpendicular spaces for example at supermarket car parks, where access to the boot is important.
