Recommended vaccinations for school girls to prevent cancer

2016-02-11 06:00

The Department of Health next week embarks on a Human Papilloma-virus (HPV) and Deworming campaign, targeting Grade 4 girls at all government schools.

HPV vaccination is recommended for girls aged 11 and 12 years as it is ideal for females to get the vaccine before they become sexually active and exposed to HPV. The vaccination is also recommended for girls and women aged 13 through 26 years who have not yet been vaccinated or completed the vaccine series.

In fact HPV vaccine can be given to girls at age 9 years.

The campaign runs from Tuesday, February 16th to Friday, March 11th.

“Nurses will be visiting all government schools to administer the HPV vaccine. It is to prevent cervical cancer,” said Nomvuyiseko Maqokolo, Health Promotion Co-ordinator in the Uitenhage and Despatch areas.

HPV causes cervical cancers as well as cancers of the oropharynx (back of throat including base of tongue and tonsils).

“Consent forms will be sent to schools and we humbly request all parents to sign the consent forms given to their child. Without the consent form we cannot give the learner the vaccine,” said Maqokolo.
