For the third consecutive year, Solomon Mahlangu High School achieved the best matric results of all high schools in KwaNobuhle. To top it, the class of 2016 had the best matric results ever at the school. The winning recipe? “Class attendance, discipline and subject choices,” said Mncedi Mtengwana, principal at Solomon Mahlangu High School.“It is very important to assess learners individually and assist them in choosing the best subject combination to suit their abilities and talent.”Class attendance is non-negotiable at Solomon Mahlangu. The school gate closes at 08:00 and if a learner is late the only entrance will be if he or she is accompanied by a parent or guardian. “If you are not disciplined, you are like a shoe without a sole. You have to have a sole in your shoe to be able to walk your walk. “There will be stumbling blocks on your road, but if you have soles, you are equipped to overcome these problems and reach your destination in life,” said Mtengwana.Education can kill poverty “The biggest challenge at Solomon Mahlangu is poverty, but the weapon to kill it is education. “School attendance is free and learners receive a healthy meal, so there is nothing prohibiting learners from attending school and achieving the best they can,” said Mtengwana. He explains that the school’s statistics of 2016 indicated that 49% of its learners came from homes where parents are unemployed. A total of 38% of learners have lost both parents. “But if you check their records, they attend school every day.”The safety at school is non- negotiable with no tolerance of drugs. Learners are tested and when results show positive, their parents or guardians are called in. His message in encouraging children to learn he explains as follows: “There are two ‘p’ words to choose from, pain or pleasure. If you are enjoying the wrong in life, it might give you pleasure, but the pain will undoubtedly come. If you are in pain by working hard, attending school, sacrificing what your peer group is enjoying, success will follow. And undoubtedly this will be a pleasure.”“We all have an interest in the school. Teachers, non-educating staff, even the groundsman are all committed and willing to sacrifice their time in support of our learners. We also appreciate the support of the school governing body, parents and stakeholders. “A school like Solomon Mahlangu is there to help learners making their dreams come true. There is no limit to success.“If your shoes have soles and you are disciplined and show respect, the sky is the limit!” said Mtengwana.
