Temporary closure of municipal drop-off site

THE municipal waste drop-off site next to Gillespie Street in Uitenhage, will be closed for a period of approximately four months to do upgrades.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Public Health, Waste Management Sub-directorate, issued a statement on Monday, advising residents that the Gillespie Waste Drop-Off Site will be closed as of Monday, June 3, 2019.

The closure is due to upgrade work that will be done to the site to improve its capability and conditions.

Residents are requested to make use of the Koedoeskloof Disposal Site or the following alternative sites listed below:

•Hillwacht Road, off Verwoerd Drive, Vanes Estate

•Ntambanani Street, KwaNobuhle

•Laksman Avenue, Rosedale

•Tambo off Lambata Street, McNaughton

•Zolile Road, KwaNobuhle

•Sarili Street, KwaNobuhle

•Jolobe Street, KwaNobuhle

•Ngeyakhe Street, KwaNobuhle

•High Street, Middle Street Area

•Moffat Road, Rosedale

•Mallard Drive, Blikkiesdorp

•Lamore Street, Daleview

•Butise Street, Khayamnandi

•Bereng Road, KwaNobuhle

Municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki said, “Residents are kindly requested to refrain from dumping waste on any land or road other than a licensed site approved by the municipality.

“It is an offence and a fine of up to R2 000 may be imposed on offenders for illegal dumping.

“Additional to this fine, the municipality may also recover the cost of cleaning/removing the illegal dumping from the person/persons to whom the notice was served,” said Mniki.

Garden waste less than 2 tonnes is accepted free of charge at any landfill site.

According to the Ward 51 councillor, Pieter Terblanche, the upgrading will consist of the building of a security office, tarring of the terrain and building new strengthened drop off walls with safety barriers.
