Nelson Mandela Bay is soon going to play host to arguably one of the most spectacular sporting events in the country.

The Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship is all set to be one of the biggest and most exciting races Port Elizabeth has yet seen. On Sunday, April 10th, Hobie Beach will be completely abuzz with world class triathletes and some 80 000 supporters and spectators, all wanting to take in as much of the action as possible.

This event has been a firm favourite on the European race circuit for over a decade, and is known to attract the best professional triathletes across the globe. The stellar men’s professional field is comprised of Ronnie Schildknecht, Victor Del Corral Morales, Boris Stein, Ben Hoffman, Matt Trautman and Port Elizabeth’s very own, Kyle Buckingham.

The professional women’s field is the strongest that the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship has ever seen, with defending champion, Jodie Swallow in the forefront. Lucy Gossage, Susie Cheetham, Diana Riesler and Annah Watkinson are all going to make this race into one that cannot be missed.

A brand new bike course will be implemented this year which will take athletes out on two flat, fast laps of 90.1km, on one of the most spectacular bike courses on the entire IRONMAN circuit. With the first change to the run course in its eleven year history, the new run course will bring athletes closer to their fans and supporters, thanks to four loops along Marine Drive.

Together with the main event on Sunday 10 April, be sure not to miss out on the extremely exciting side events that will make the entire weekend filled with all things that are IRONMAN! The weekend kicks off the Vodacom Corporate Triathlon Challenge (CTC), followed by the highly anticipated Spur IRONKIDS on Saturday 9 April.

An event of this stature and magnitude is made more extraordinary by the immense support that fans display for their favourite triathlete. The atmosphere that builds throughout race day is truly magical and reaches an epic high at the finish line party!
