Total of 243 suspects arrested

A total of 243 suspects have been arrested by police members from the Uitenhage Cluster during crime prevention operations held last weekend.

These suspects were arrested for various crimes which include murder, robbery, rape, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and the possession of suspected stolen goods. Ten (10) persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, a total of 29 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R14 500. The suspects were also arrested on charges relating to protection orders, malicious damage to property, shoplifting and 22 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs.

The South African Police Service appeals to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property.
