The “First Lady” of the Uitenhage police, Brigadier Leonie Bentley, was praised at the Community Policing Forum meeting last Thursday, and thanked for the exceptional way in which she let justice prevail by steering safety and security in the right way.

At the meeting it was officially announced that Brigadier Bentley was transferred to serve as station commander at Gelvandale Police Station, as from the start of June 2016.

“I made an oath. As a proud member of the South African Police Service, I will go wherever I am needed. And I will serve that community,” said Brigadier Leonie Bentley.

Among the many challenges in the midst of a gangster-crippled area, she will strive to safeguard the innocent and bring back stability to the community.

For the past four years she was the station commander at Uitenhage Police Station. She praised the Uitenhage CPF committee and members for their unselfishness, dedication and voluntarily assistance in supporting the police.

“I encourage all to co-operate with the CPF. Help them to sustain their presence in neighbourhoods and to continue being the eyes and ears of the police,” said Brigadier Bentley.

Pat Unsworth, chairperson of the Uitenhage CPF said, “We are losing someone who has put her heart and soul into this station, its members and the community.

“She has done so much to protect, educate and guide us all. We are losing our mentor. But we wish her good luck and will keep her in our prayers,”said Unsworth.

Brigadier Lawrence Soekoe, former station commander at Gelvandale and later cluster commander in Aliwal North, has been transferred to Uitenhage.

Brigadier Soekoe is no stranger to town, as he previously served as station commander in Uitenhage, with Brigadier Bentley as his successor.
