Unique Despatch road race medal for athletes

AN Algoasaurus will be the unique emblem appearing on medals and T-shirts of the forthcoming Despatch Road Race, which annually is known for its eccentric medals portraying the town’s rich history.

The Algoasaurus is a member of the family of dinosaurs called Sauropods which means “lizard foot” even though their feet were more like those of an elephant. These dinosaurs were long-necked and long-legged herbivores.

Fossils of such a dinosaur were recovered by workmen from a quarry in Despatch during 1903. They did not recognize it as dinosaur specimens, so many of the bones mere made into bricks and thus destroyed. The animal may have been around nine metres high when it died.

“This again is unique to the road race organised by the Despatch Athletics Club. Our first medal was a unique mini brick and the following year we had a small replica of the famous chimney,” said Yvette Jonker, secretary of the Despatch Athletics Club.

“All of these are symbols portraying the history of Despatch. The town derived its name from a famous brick-making industry, thus we previously used the mini brick and mini chimney as our road race emblems.”

All finishers of the fast and flat 10km road race as well as of the 5km event will each receive one of these unique medals.

Winners of the 10km respective categories will also receive cash prizes. The road race will be held in Despatch on Saturday, 31 August with the start and finish points at Despatch Superspar in Dr Rabie Street.

The 10km road race is a Prestige League event and it starts at 07:00, whilst the 5km which is sponsored by Klinicare Despatch will start at 07:15. The overall winner of the 5km will receive a brand new mountain bike, whilst the first male and female finishers will each receive a hamper.

There will be lots of lucky draws like a Superspar voucher to the value of R2 500 and a UD Sports voucher valued R2 000.

As part of the sporting event there will be an anti-litter campaign and participants are requested please to make use of the refuse bins alongside the route. Littering outside the designated areas could lead to disqualification. So may the wearing of earphones also lead to disqualification.
