Wanted: unique trophy designs for Ironman world championship

2018-03-01 06:00

EASTERN Cape artists can compete for a chance to design the coveted trophies for the winners of the first ever Ironman 70.3 World Championship hosted by an African country.

Thousands of triathlon athletes from across the world will be flocking to Nelson Mandela Bay to compete on 1 and 2 September for the opportunity to raise those trophies after completing a grueling swim, cycle and running course.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Siyasanga Sijadu said, “We are inviting artists to submit concept designs of the winning male and female trophies before March 16th. Since we are only in the first round of submissions, artists are not expected to present final artworks and their creations can be in any format.

“It is crucial that our designs stand out and improve on what other host cities had on their winning podia,” MMC Sijadu said.

The rules

The first round of selections will take place on Tuesday 20th March at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, 1 Park Drive, Central. Entry forms will be available at the Art Museum, the Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture buildings in St Georges Park and at local galleries. They will also be available to download from the NMM Art Museum and NMBM websites.

The concept proposals must not exceed a space of 2m x 2m when fully installed. From these proposals ten concept trophies will be selected to take part in the next stage of the competition. The top ten presentations will be displayed at the Standard Bank Ironman African Championship in April when the public will be able to vote for their favourite design at the exhibition.

R10 000 for winning design

The winner will be selected at the end of April 2018 and the winning artist/s will receive prize money of R 10 000. Technical support will be provided for the final production of the two awards to be presented to the top male and female athlete.

Closing date

Closing date for submissions is Friday 16th March 2018. All submissions must be presented on this date to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum between 9:00 – 17:00.
