Wie gaan dié tafeltennis-manne borg?

Twee tafeltennisspelers van Despatch is in die Oos-Kaap span ingesluit wat volgende week aan die Suid-Afrikaanse ope-kampioenskappe vir veterane gaan deelneem in Pretoria.

Despatch tafel-tennisklub is een van die kleinste klubs in die unie en is trots op Julian Horne en Cliffie Bouwer wat die provinsie gaan verteenwoordig.

Beide is gedugte spelers in die plaaslike premierliga.

Bouwer, eens ’n kranige krieket- en bofbal-speler, sê die Despatch tafeltennisklub is nou in sy vyfde jaar.

“Ons het in my motorhuis begin sosiaal tafeltennis speel. Toe kom daar meer en meer mense en nou speel ons Dinsdae vanaf 19:00 in die Despatch Stadsaal,” sê Bouwer.

Die klub is betrokke by ontwikkeling van dié sport en help met afrigting by Oosterland Jeugsentrum.

Dit is ’n vinnige spel. Huidiglik is die vinnigste spoed waarteen ’n tafeltennisbal geprojekteer is sowat 112km/h. En dit oor die afstand van ’n tafel-tennis-oppervlak wat net 2.74 meter is!

“Jou konsentrasie en hand-oog koördinasie moet goed wees,” sê Julian Horne.

Volgens Horne en Bouwer gebruik die meeste spelers in die Oos-Kaap rubber spane, maar in die noorde hou spelers van pimpel-spane.

“Pimpel is stadiger en dit frustreer ’n aanvallende speler. Ons ouens wat aanvallend speel weet wat om van ’n ander aanvallende speler te verwag, maar dit is moeilik om ’n pimpelspeler se spel te lees,” sê Bouwer.

Horne sê hy hou van ’n vinnige spel en spot dat Bouwer (wie bril dra) vier oë het en daarom is sy spel so blitsig!

Tafeltennis is ’n duur sport en ’n goeie spaan kos gemiddeld R1 400. Die klub is tans op soek na ’n borg, veral om dit vir meer jonges moontlik te maak om tafeltennis te speel.

“As die adrenaliengogga van tafeltennis jou eers beetgekry het, is dit ’n spel wat jy wíl speel,” sê Horne.

Die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe word van 5 tot 8 Oktober gehou. Horne en Bouwer moet elkeen sowat R5 000 opdok om die kampioenskappe by te woon.

The Ocean Basket Drawn Pairs will be played today at 17:30. An October Feast Trips competition sponsored by Brent Tonnesen will be held on Saturday, 22 October. No gender restriction but one member must be a non-bowler. Entry fee is R210 per team which includes green fees and lunch. Two games of 15 ends with 3 skins of 5 ends. Scoring two points per skin and four per win. Eisbeins will be served at R70 per person. Bookings are essential for catering purposes. Prizes for the best dressed traditional German outfit. First prize R900, second R600, and third R300. Entries may be done by e-mail, telephone or on notice board. Chicken and eggs won by Esme, Cliffie, Mossie, Irene, Owen and Pillie. Attendance total is R800.
