Woman who lied about ‘stolen cellphone’ arrested

2019-03-07 06:02

A 31-year-old woman from Uitenhage was arrested and charged for perjury, after she claimed that her cellphone was stolen and it eventually proved to be false.

Her arrest followed after a case of robbery (of a cellphone) was opened.

According to her statement she was taking “selfies” with her cellphone on Valentine’s Day at about 05:30, close to the corners of John- and Caledon Street, when an unknown male verbally threatened her and robbed her of her Huawei P Smart cellphone worth over R10 000.

“She reported the case of robbery only two days later. Intensive investigations into the alleged robbery followed and it was exposed that the cellphone was never stolen and that it was still being used by the complainant,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart.

The accused, Nolubabalo Gula (31) appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on a charge of perjury. She was released on warning and the case was remanded until yesterday for further investigation.

The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll commended the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Deon Roos for his excellent investigation skills and ensuring that those who break the law are brought to book. Brigadier Koll also warned the community not to make false statements, as perjury is a serious offence and the consequences can be severe. - REPORTER
