A workshop for aspiring writers was hosted in Uitenhage by the Writer’s Guild of South Africa with the aim to focus on two types of writing, namely traditional and new media.

Traditiaonal media includes television, screenplay, stage plays and radio whilst new media focusses on webcasting and gaming.

The workshop was facilitated by Adelle Gascoyne from the Guild and titled “Acting emotion in screenwriting”. She covered a wide range of human emotions and how to successfully bring this into screenwriting.

“Few people understand the dynamics of emotion and the role it plays in conflict,” said Gascoyne.

“As writers, we need to understand what makes people tick to bring realism to our stories and make a positive moral impact on our audience.

“One of my practical exercises showed participants how tracking the impact of a single emotion can provide the skeleton for an entire movie or television series. That was a powerful takeaway for everyone.”

One of the attendees, Dr Bongani Lujabe, said: “It really was practical and empowering skills impartation which created an appetite to learn more.”

According to Parker, a student at Nelson Mandela University, it was a great event and he “can’t wait to build on my concepts and write a full scene.”

The group of aspiring writers will meet once a month on each first Saturday of a month in either Uitenhage or Jeffreys Bay.
