Zanolwazi Senior Secondary School in Khayamnandi near Despatch, one of the schools adopted by the premier of the Eastern Cape, last week honoured Nelson Mandela in hosting a special 67 Minutes for Tata Madiba event.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, leaders and ward councillors. The school’s choir performed several songs in honour of Madiba and learners dramatized Madiba’s life whilst poems were read. Thereafter the 889 learners were given black bags and requested to pick up litter in the school yard and also at the neighbouring heritage site.

Organiser of the event, Buyiswa Qundele, said owing to July 18th being in the school holidays, they have decided to commemorate Tata Madiba on the last day of school in July.

School principal Yoliswa Gxotiwe said, “This is a school of twins. It is very rare to have so many twins and even triplets in one school. It must mean something. I do not know what, but believe that it is a kind of blessing.”

In a renewed effort to improve Zanolwazi’s matric results, the school was “blessed” in 2016 when the pass rate was doubled from 2015.

“This year we aim at a pass rate of 75%. And may it be blessed with such an achievement. It will make us very happy,” said Mrs Gxotiwe.

Being adopted by the premier, the school’s library was refurbished, they received study guides, laptops loaded with software to assist the teachers in their duties and the school was fully equipped with an ICT lab.
