Cape Town – Schools with 0% pass rates deny children the right to basic education, the Democratic Alliance has said.

The party said this after 22 schools in the country achieved 0% pass rate.

The schools had pupil numbers ranging from 1 to 37, according to the Department of Basic Education’s 2015 School Performance Report.

Some of them were special needs schools.

In KwaZulu-Natal, 12 schools obtained a 0% pass rate, six were in Gauteng, two were in the Eastern Cape, one in the Northern Cape and one in Limpopo.

DA education spokesperson Gavin Davis said it was a shocking state of affairs.

"We believe that the right to a decent basic education enshrined in our Constitution is being denied to the children at these schools," he said.

The party said no child deserved to go to a school that could not produce a single matric pass.

"The performance of these schools is an affront to the dignity of every child that attends them," Davis said.

According to the performance report, 243 schools obtained between 0-19.9%, while 775 got between 20-39.9%.

The 2015 matric exam national pass rate dropped to 70.7% in 2015.
