Johannesburg - One person was killed and two were injured when an eight ton truck overturned on the R102 in Verulam near Durban at around 04:00, paramedics said on Tuesday.

The truck allegedly veered across the road, crashed through barriers and overturned before coming to rest on its side, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

A man who had been thrown from the truck was trapped under the wreckage, Botha said.

He died on the scene despite efforts by paramedics and the fire department to free him from beneath the vehicle and stabilise him.

Two of the truck's passengers were treated for minor injuries and transported to hospital.
