Johannesburg - One person has bee killed and nine injured after a taxi rolled and crashed into a tree in Durban, Netcare911 paramedics said on Sunday.

"One person tragically died at the scene; one was in a critical condition, while eight others were seriously injured," said spokesperson Chris Botha in a statement.

Paramedics and firefighters who arrived at the scene of the accident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Park Hill, had to use the Jaws of Life to free some of the injured from the wreckage.

Once stabilised, the victims were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police are now investigating the cause of the accident.
