1 dead after luxury liner crashes

2012-11-24 14:06

Johannesburg - A man was killed and seven others injured when a bus crashed on the Ben Schoeman highway in Pretoria on Saturday, paramedics said.

"A luxury liner was travelling on the road when it allegedly veered out of control and left the road," ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said.

"The bus then crashed through the roadside barrier and proceeded to overturn down an embankment."

People were thrown from the bus as it overturned, Visser said.

The man who died was found trapped under the vehicle.

"It is believed that the man was ejected from the bus as it overturned and the bus then proceeded to roll over [him]," Visser said.

A luxury liner sails. Im sure the word liner refers to the bus maker? So sad, another bus accident.

      terrylee.heuer - 2012-11-24 14:29

When I read the headline I also thought gosh which luxury cruise liner had an accident now!! Very sad indeed the driver could have been tired!! I hope they not too shortstaffed as has been reported before where these guys do double trips to make up time which causes fatigue!!

      rachell.lass - 2012-11-24 14:36

Agreed, Gary. I came to this article thinking another cruise liner had crashed, and found myself on the freeway in Pretoria.

      BulletProof. - 2012-11-24 14:47

I was thinking how a cruise liner like that can crash on the Ben Schoeman Highway if it is so far from the sea?

      barbara.foster.50702769 - 2012-11-25 07:52

I have family sailing on a luxury liner at present so was eager to read this only to find out that the luxury liner was a bus. BUT...I am NOT surprised...

  • zmvulane - 2012-11-24 14:27

Pointless article! Why not mention the name of the luxury liner?

      mduduzik - 2012-11-24 17:20

People, people luxury liner is the name of the company, like sa road link.It operates in park station asmost of other buses.

      lara.vanrooyen.1 - 2012-11-25 07:52

Then it should read, '1 dead after Luxury Liner bus crashes.'

  • yannick.pousson - 2012-11-24 15:26

By the picture, it looks like inter city bus service. I have used that bus service numerous times, now I'm not so sure!

  • acm.munro - 2012-11-24 16:04

For one moment I was very confused ... I thought a 'liner" meant a ship??

  • mary.smorenburg - 2012-11-24 16:09

A luxury liner is a SHIP. Perhaps you mean a bus?

  • nelia.liebenberg.1 - 2012-11-24 16:26

I fail to understand why the bus "proceeded to roll over him."

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-11-25 07:48

      Bad bus!!

      zirk.burger - 2012-11-25 12:52

Its was a bad choice of words, but what happens here and in alot of mva where the vehicle overturs is that while the vehicle overturns the centrivical force ejects you from the vehicle and since you were traveling in the same direction as the vehilce it is possible that if ejected at the correct time you will end up in the path of such vehicle and sorry to say then the chance is there that it will be going over your body crashing you to death.

  • Donkervlie - 2012-11-24 20:04

First you call it a luxury liner in your headlines. so we expect to read something about a passenger ship at sea. Then we read the article and find out it is a bus. News 24 talk to the idiots that are writting for you.

      nelia.liebenberg.1 - 2012-11-25 03:44

Maybe the editor was having a bad hair day. Koppie eina.

      enock.tumisang - 2012-11-25 05:46

What do u want it to be called? U are not an Editor I guess! Leave the professionals to do their job. If u see the term Luxury liner what is the first thing that comes to your mind?

      jo.vankatwijk - 2012-11-25 06:18

@enock. A "liner" is a ship. Anyhow, there's nothing "luxury" about a bus, any bus.

      fanie.gerber1972 - 2012-11-25 06:52

Luxury Liner in this case is the name of the bus company - see them often on the highway
