1 killed as plane crashes at air show

2012-06-30 11:27

Johannesburg - The aircraft which crashed at the Klerksdorp Air Show in the North West province on Saturday morning was privately owned, the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) said.

Spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said the aircraft was an L-39 Albatros which does not belong to the Air force.

Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Frans Motaung confirmed the crash and said investigators were on their way to the scene.

He could give no further details.

Earlier, paramedics said a SANDF pilot flying a Viper was killed.

The pilot was attempting an aerial manoeuvre when the aircraft crashed, bursting into flames on impact, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

"The cause of the crash and the series of events preceding it remain uncertain and will form the subject of a Civil Aviation Authority investigation."

Further details were not immediately available.

Sad day for aviation. I hope this does not affect the other pilots who still have to do their displays, especially the SAAF pilots.

The show was stopped for a while, but then the other pilots convened and decided the show will go on out of respect for the deceased. A short while later the air was filled with thunder again. I guess fighter pilots are a breed on their own.

So, get a journalist onto the scene and tell us what happened! That's why there is News24 - to get journalists to the scene of a happening and inform the public.

We we're there, happened right in front of us!! It was terrible, almost like we were watching a movie! We were so upset we went straight home. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the pilot.

I wonder if any statistics are kept about crashes during airshows but I have noticed that you hear about them quite often- would be interesting to know if the rate is higher than during "normal" operations. For now I mostly feel a bit restless when attending airshows and try to place my little family out of the possible crash zone...

there are more road accidents every day !!! you have more chance of being killed by lightning than at an air show the boys are professional and well trained . R I P FLY HIGH AND TOUCH THE FACE OF GOD .

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
