Pretoria- One person was killed and more than a thousand others were left homeless following fires in various informal settlements in the Western Cape on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Spokesperson Theo Layne said a fire in Mandela Park in Hout Bay on Saturday night left over 500 structures destroyed with about a thousand people displaced.

"One adult male was deceased during the fire. The fire started just after 23:30," he said.

Another fire in Khayelitsha’s KT Section early on Sunday morning resulted in 26 structures being destroyed and 74 people left displaced. Layne said no injuries or fatalities were reported.

"Firefighters are still on scene carrying out mopping up operations. Incidents [have been] handed over to SAPS for investigation," he said.

There was another fire in Slangkop, Misty Cliffs, where an extensive area of vegetation burned.

The causes of the fires were not known.

He said earlier that at least eight people were killed and 19 others were displaced in the early hours of Saturday morning across Cape Town when their shacks in were engulfed in flames.
