Johannesburg - Ten people died and six were injured in two road accidents in Mpumalanga at the weekend, the community safety department said on Monday.

Five people, including a pregnant woman and a 4-year-old child, died just after midnight on Sunday, in an accident involving four cars, department spokesman Joseph Mabuza said in a statement.

The accident happened on the R573 between Kwaggafontein and Moteti.

Five people were seriously injured and were taken to nearby hospitals.

Police were investigating a case of culpable homicide and drunk driving against one of the drivers.

On Friday night, five people died when two cars collided head-on on the D2296 road near Nelspruit. One person was seriously injured and was taken to hospital.

Mpumalanga community safety MEC Vusi Shongwe had called on motorists to be more vigilant on the roads to avoid accidents, Mabuza said.
