Bushbuckridge - Police are investigating the tragic circumstances of a murder-suicide, which has left 10 children orphaned.

The family of a Bushbuckridge couple are struggling to understand why Andries Lekwadi turned on his wife Phindile Lekwadi, 62. He hacked her to death with an axe on Tuesday morning.

Lekwadi, from Majembeni outside Bushbuckridge, took his own life after killing his wife.

According to family member Piet Mashego, Lekwadi had become jealous and angry when a man had came to collect money from his wife.

"We are deeply saddened as a family, and we did not suspect or expect anything like this. We are powerless over the matter," said Mashego.

He said that Lekwadi had orphaned the couple's 10 children.

"The impulsive decision that my cousin made to take both his life and that of his wife was utterly selfish, because he is not God to decide who dies and who lives," he said.

According to Bushbuckridge police spokesperson Ndlovukazi Mashele, an inquest docket had been opened.

"We have not yet uncovered what could have cost the death of the husband, but there are suspicions that he may have overdosed himself with pills after taking the life of his wife. Investigations are still being conducted at this point."
