Johannesburg - A total of 102 Gauteng teachers were fired in the last financial year, the provincial education department said on Tuesday.

The majority of them, 64, lost their jobs because of absconding while 11 were dismissed for sexual harassment, said education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

"The high number of dismissed employees is clearly disturbing as it goes into the heart of employment relations, however, the duty to act in good faith... is a fundamental principle of employment relations," he said while delivering an address on the province's state of education.

He added that the department had lost 2 948 teachers over the same period.

"The passing of the Taxation Laws Amendment Act caused a lot of panic or uncertainty specifically within the education sector," Lesufi said.

He said the proposed changes which were intended to have come into effect on March 1 this year, were meant to remove the differences between pension and provident funds, with respect to tax deductibility and the cash lump sum that could be taken at the time of retirement.

"This together with the high levels of debt that educators have incurred, presented a good proposition for educators to see early retirement or resignation with an intention of cash-in on their pensions," he said.

Of the almost 3 000 that have left the system, 1 671 of them resigned while 1 236 took early retirement and 41 went on medical retirement.
