11 illegal miners die in Benoni

Johannesburg - Officials are recovering the bodies of at least 10 illegal miners in Benoni, on the East Rand, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has reported.

It reported 11 miners had apparently died and at least 10 bodies were reportedly still underground.

Ekurhuleni metro police's Clifford Shongwe told News24 one body was recovered on Tuesday morning.

"We don't have concrete evidence that there are 10 more [underground], it is an allegation - that is what people are saying there."

He could not immediately say what the cause of death for the one man had been.
