Cape Town - A police task team is on the hunt for 12 awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the holding cells of the Delft police station after assaulting and overpowering a police officer at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said 14 prisoners escaped at 08:00 on Saturday but two were rearrested shortly after the breakout.

"A warrant officer was doing a cell visit when he was attacked and overpowered by inmates. After assaulting the member [the] awaiting trial prisoners escaped by opening the cell doors with the key," he said.

The police officer was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.

Police have warned community members not to approach the escapees.

"The community is requested not to try and apprehend the suspects as they are deemed dangerous," Van Wyk said.
