12 hurt in 5-car pile-up on N2

2011-01-13 12:43

Cape Town - Twelve people were injured in a minibus taxi accident on the N2 in Cape Town, emergency services said on Thursday.

"A serious collision occurred this morning on the N2 highway just before the Borcherds Quarry off-ramp near the airport," said ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser.

A minibus taxi allegedly collided with the vehicle in front of it at "some speed", causing three other cars to also rear-end each other.

All the injured were passengers in the badly-damaged taxi. Eight of them sustained minor injuries such as bruising and lacerations. Four were injured seriously and taken to hospitals in the area.

The arrogance of these taxi drivers is totally unacceptable. Something drastic has to be done to get them to obey traffic laws.

      SymbolOfLife - 2011-01-13 13:07

Like scrapping the service completely.... - 2011-01-13 13:18

i agree something needs to be done soon.

  • Antoinette - 2011-01-13 12:58

Yes, cos a Taxi only goes at the specified 100km/h.

  • rmarkram - 2011-01-13 13:00

Typical taxi drivers. SA should really ban these and invest in proper public transport.

  • watalife - 2011-01-13 13:09

Yet another RAF claim. They should all have 3rd party insurance that could possibly help teach them some accountability for there wrong actions.

      TonyRSA - 2011-01-13 14:12

Yes 3rd party insurance should have been law a long time ago. The problem is that these criminals have no licence at all and the cops only sit at roadblocks instead of being out there in bikes as it was in the good old days. Some days ago one of these idiots with no licence jumped a side street robot and killed 4 people in Bellville. The taxi owner arrived and was only interested in the wreck of his unlicenced minibus.

  • daspoort - 2011-01-13 13:11

3 car pile-up. Why? Because nobody keeps a safe following distance anymore!! I've seen it in Joburg and in CPT, everybody these days are driving right on each other's backs, if something happens, a pile up is inevitable. LESSON LEARNED: KEEP YOUR DISTANCE YOU DUMBASS DRIVERS!!!!

      Rupick - 2011-01-13 14:10

If you call normal law abiding citizens DUMBASS DRIVERS what would you call a baboon that cause the accident in the first place.

      Melanie - 2011-01-13 14:23

people drive right on each other's backs because some arse will always try to jump the queue by squeezing into the "folling distance" gap.

      daspoort - 2011-01-13 14:31

@Rupick. Yes, if you drive @ 100 - 120km/h within 5-10m from the car in front of you, you are a DUMBASS DRIVER!! I would call the baboon who caused the accident a baboon! @Melanie. I know, I get frustrated too by guys cutting in when you keep a following distance. But your attitude of "Screw them, they wont cut in front of me, I will drive on the front guys back" is just the attitude that cause more accidents.

      123online123 - 2011-01-13 14:33

Melanie, so it's idiots like you that leave no following distance and cause accidents like this. Sometimes one has to change lanes to get where you need to be but morons like you are just scared of getting to your destination a split second later! Good on you for being so utterly selfish and causing accidents!

      nathang247 - 2011-01-13 14:35

Slow drivers should also be considered and stay in the left lane. In the same breath guys doing higher speed should also show a bit of patienceto allow drivers to move over into the slow lane. When you keep your travelling distance however slow drivers just don't give way.

      123online123 - 2011-01-13 14:38

Melanie, you're probably the kind of person who speeds up to block people from changing lanes. I experienced some bltch like you trying to block me this morning on the highway when I tried to change lanes. She came second best because the cr@p she was driving was not fast or strong enough. Probably the last time she buys a Conquest.

      Shistirrer - 2011-01-13 16:26

Daspoort, please refrain from making comments if you don't know the facts! Jy maak net jou naam gat. I have a friend who saw it all happening. The four cars were stationery, as happens on that stretch of road nearly every day. The taxi rear-ended the last car, pushing everybody forward in a domino effect. The TAXI was speeding and had NO BRAKES, the four cars were NOT EVEN MOVING. Lesson learned: Keep your trap shut, you dumbass commenter.

      daspoort - 2011-01-13 18:58

@Shistirrer. There is a general phenomenon that people do not keep a following distance. So I stand by that. I've driven the N2 numerous times, and stationary vehicles are not that common as you claim. So, go stir sh*t somewhere else.

      adrianjoebert - 2011-02-20 23:09

Shistirrer, bit of a hostile response, don't you think? Nobody expected daspoort (or anybody else) to have all the info. His comment is very reasonable if interpreted generally.

      Hardtalk - 2011-03-13 14:32

***Melanie*** bet you wished you kept your mouth shut. When your turn comes you will be able to say WoW they were right. Be it at the pearly gates or in a mangled mess in pain hoping someone will risk their life to get you out. Just some extra tips, get good medical cover and wear your seatbelt.

  • Ederik - 2011-01-13 14:00

Na 'n maandelange ondersoek het die taxi vervaardigers eindelik agtergekom wat die probleem met taxis is. Daar is 'n probleem met die moer wat die stuurwiel vashou.

  • don.ruffels - 2011-01-13 14:25

He! He! He! He! I am crumpled up with laughter - obey traffic laws - what a joke. A taxi is a coffin on wheels hired by the devil to cause mayhem -Communters if you have a desire to die then use a taxi. Maybe not today, but I can assure it will happen and your desire will come true

  • logical007 - 2011-01-13 14:33

Put Winnie, cele and julius in a Taxi !!! Problems solved!

  • - 2011-01-13 14:42

Make it law that these taxis are adjusted so they are unable to go over 80km/h maximum. Build in the monitors they have on overseas buses that records how often the car stops, for how long, and what speeds it travels. Random checks to be done and any found with data that is taken off the road immediately and fined (and if found to be tampering with the devices, remove from the road permanently and license removed - and taxi owner FINED)

  • Nono Tyatyeka - 2011-01-13 15:19

I use this road each and every morning and I can tell you the cars/taxi/busses even trucks ALL SPEED...

  • Hardtalk - 2011-01-14 09:17

Mr. Zuma please cancel all the jobs you have promised - soon there will be no one to take them.

  • lindi.sinolwazi - 2011-02-22 09:04

While on the subject of traffic - I often wonder whether I should get my speedo checked. As I travel along at the stipulated 100 km/ph speed limit and someone is "dying" to pass - esp. mimibuses and even small vehicles. Also, I thought that speed limit applies to motorbikes as well - which frighten one almost to death as they thunder past - crossing solid lines etc...

  • Hardtalk - 2011-03-13 14:23

Another TAXI accident – every day more death and mayhem. With these deaths and aids deaths every day, South Africa will soon run out of people. Add to this – murder – rape – highjacking – robbery and a corrupt government, we have no hope. To be honest I do not use taxis and never would want to, what I cannot understand is why do you people put up with it? With ten to twenty passengers in a taxi how can the driver do what he wants? If he is smoking tell him to stop immediately. If he is playing load music tell him to stop immediately. If he is driving to fast or dangerously tell him to stop immediately. With ten to twenty people against one driver you have to win. If not when he does stop drag him out and show him what peoples rule can do - EASY FIX. You people march and demand services and the like but do nothing about someone trying to kill you.
