Johannesburg - The Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) has shortlisted 13 people for the vacancy of part-time commissioner, the office of the chief justice announced on Friday.

This was after President Jacob Zuma, in September last year, accepted the National Assembly's request to re-initiate the process.

Acting Speaker Lechesa Tsenoli informed Zuma it was decided not to recommend a candidate for the appointment of a part-time commissioner, because the list did not have sufficient choices with regards to gender and race.

The list submitted to the National Assembly by the selection panel, chaired by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, consisted of seven black men and women and one white woman.

The part-time position became vacant following the resignation of Raenette Taljaard in February last year.

There are currently no women serving on the IEC following her resignation and that of former IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula, who left in the wake of a botched lease deal.

Mogoeng's office on Friday said the chief justice and the panel had met and shortlisted the new candidates.

The panel is made up of Mogoeng, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, SA Human Rights Commission chairperson Lawrence Mushwana and Commission for Gender Equality chairperson Mfanozelwe Shozi.

The candidates will be interviewed on February 17.

Those short-listed candidates are:

- Lovetta Carline Bolters;

- Teresa Conradie;

- Lourens Johannes De Klerk;

- Isobel Elise Konyn;

- Janet Love;

- Sibusiso Armstrong Magwaza;

- Dr Nomsa Praisy Masuku;

- Mamodupi Mohlala-Mulaudzi;

- Madibeng Chris Mokoditwa;

- Dr Oupa Moshebi;

- Nkosikhulule Xhawulengweni Nyembezi;

- Leago Stella Takalani; and

- Advocate Johannes Collen Weapond.
