Johannesburg - Fourteen illegal miners were arrested in Welkom on Wednesday, Free State police said.

They were arrested after police received a tip-off about three men in possession of illegal firearms, said police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng.

Police chased them into an unused hostel at the President Steyn mine's number two shaft, where they started shooting and throwing stones at the officers.

Police arrested a total of seven men and confiscated three illegal firearms and ammunition.

Another seven men were arrested for not having valid residence papers.

No one was injured in the shootout.

The men will appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Friday.
