Johannesburg - A total of fourteen people were injured after an explosion at the Natref refinery in Sasolburg, Free State on Monday.

Sasol spokesperson Alex Anderson said the explosion occurred in the vicinity of the hydrogen compressors around 07:45 on Monday morning.

Eight people had been treated for shock, three for dust inhalation, and three for minor injuries, Anderson said.

He said the explosion had resulted in a fire, which was extinguished by 08:45.

Natref’s emergency services were activated immediately and all personnel evacuated from the area.

"Operating units in the vicinity of the hydrogen compressors have been shut down. An investigation into the incident has already commenced to establish the cause, as well as to better understand the impact of the incident on production."

Anderson said that Natref took incidents of this nature very seriously.

"The safety and well-being of our employees, service providers and communities is a priority," he said.
