15 000 in SA aged over 100 - Census

Cape Town - A surprising number of South Africans are reaching the ripe old age of 100, Census 2011 figures show, with 358 people claiming they were aged between 115 and 120 when officials came knocking on their doors last year.

Die Burger reported on Tuesday that the Census counted 2 797 South Africans over the age of 110, and 15 581 people over the age of 100.

The ages were not independently verified, and were based on information given to Census officials.

KwaZulu-Natal has the biggest provincial share of centenarians, while Cape Town is the metro with the most citizens over 100 (1 051), followed by Durban with 971 and Johannesburg with 953.

In Durban, 31 people indicated their ages as between 115 and 120.

Diet, lifestyle

A number of small rural municipalities in the Northern Cape, Limpopo and the Eastern Cape are also home to a surprisingly large number of very old citizens.

There were 14 people who claimed to be aged between 115 and 120 in uPhongolo in rural northern KwaZulu-Natal, and 12 in Mthatha’s King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality.

Blouberg local municipality in Limpopo has 102 people over 100 while Aganang, also in Limpopo, has 132 and Louis Trichardt 302.

The former mayor of Jozini, Thembeni Mahlopa-Mthethwa, said it was well-known that people in the area lived to a ripe old age and put it down to the food they eat.

“People say they’re poor, but they eat fresh food that they grow themselves, they don’t really eat meat and they get exercise from the agricultural work they do and walking to the fields.”

Dr Dawie van Velden of Stellenbosch University told Die Burger he was surprised by the high number of over-100s, but agreed that diet and lifestyle would have a definite influence on health and longevity.

“A diet that tends to be more vegetarian, without junk food, combined with a less stressful life, can definitely improve your health, so it makes sense that people living in deep rural areas could live for a long time.

“Eating slightly too little is not nearly as bad for you as over-eating, and in the city many people die because of heart failure and diabetes, which are related to diet and lifestyle.

“On the other hand, more and more retirement homes have frail care centres with specialised medical care, meaning that people can be kept alive for longer,” he said.

Aged between 115 - 120? 358 people are bloody liars. But then again, in the bible people lived for hundreds of years. (Actually they didn't really - that was a lie as well)

I think those are all people who vanished many years ago but miraculously reappear and vote for the ANC during the elections.

      Rabbler.Rouser - 2012-11-01 12:43

It means that they cannot count.

      Leah - 2012-11-01 12:48

Rabble, actually everybody can count. One, two, skip a few, 99, 100.

If I had told the kind young lady who came to our house that I was 102 she probably would have written that down without question.

Seeing as our math teachings are of the worst in the world I wouldn't be surprised if numbers like this came up!

  • buti.lembe - 2012-11-01 12:32

I wish to reach 100 years so that I can tell my grandchildren about true South African history.

Most people especially blacks don't know the year of birth they just guess. i went to primary with someone one day he came to fill his forms. i realise that he is 15yrs older than me i asked him he said that is his correct yrs. he claimed he went to school older than myself. fortunately i have a photo which shows in fact his physique was younger than me at the time

      Sechaba30 - 2012-11-01 13:24

ukhuluma amasimba, if you do not know your age shut up

      mshiniboys - 2012-11-01 13:46

Reeeeeally? so a photo of my grandmother when she was 5 years will tell you that she is still younger than you.Fascinating but dumb.

      lskosana3 - 2012-11-01 16:26

Huh?? I'm surprised there are people who understand what you wrote

  • gungets.tuft - 2012-11-01 13:24

I blame it all on Maths Lit.

      mshiniboys - 2012-11-01 13:43

      I couldnt agree more

  • brenda.hayden.372 - 2012-11-01 13:27

so the census was a success don't think so if so many people are claiming to be over 100 where our Country has a average mortality age of 54 and I know a number of people who weren't even given forms.

  • rjledwaba - 2012-11-01 13:33

Truth of the matter is most older blacks are not sure of their ages,I know this because sometimes you find that a mother is older than her first child by ten years, or there are these two grannies I know: the older one is not yet eligible for pension grant but the younger one has been getting it for more than ten years now

      mshiniboys - 2012-11-01 13:42

Flaws in your call three women "most black women".Pople will never tell you reasons for why they get grants. There is pension grant and there is pension.difference...maybe one of them used to work and retired so she is entitled to some money..not grant but pension.Or it could be she has got an ailment that requires her to start getting money early or it could even be the fact that she is so poor that social services have decided that she should get a grant. There is not only one reason for people to get government money.

      rjledwaba - 2012-11-01 14:00

Those three people were only examples of what may have caused such a large number of centeranians,I've dealt with a whole lot of older people for a year and I know for a fact that most of their ages are wrong, and the older granny who's not getting the grant is poorer the one getting it

  • mshiniboys - 2012-11-01 13:36

How many have died since Census was conducted because these results took a decade to get published...

      Antipoaching - 2012-11-01 13:53

the census was conducted last year not a decade ago

  • egmarais - 2012-11-01 13:52

If I must believe this nonesense, I cannot believe anything that the census published.

  • johnny.matsetse - 2012-11-01 14:12

Lie lie ,The census guys came to my Place as I was about to go to Work ,We met at the gate N I ask the lady to come back in the evening N To my surprise she gave me a shocking look N I was never counted , Most of them are unemployed ANC sympathisers who do not work one friend of mine from Yeoville in Joburg told me that even tbe Nigerians were employed by the CENSUS guys ,Some of these Results are not true

  • Bokrichard - 2012-11-01 15:03

And now you tell me that the ruling party who came govern the country won the elections by promising the ending of poverty and prosperous lifestyles. THE PEOPLE DO NOT WANT IT. A hungry person lives longer. GWAAA. They walk to the fields GWAAAA and so do millions. And then another reason could be mistakes made on the ID docs which were sold to people who are from other foreign countries - I do not know but somewhere something does not match.

  • karla.vanzyl.108 - 2012-11-01 16:02

When they went knocking on my boyfriends door last year we already than realized how idiotic some of the people doing the census recordings really were. The woman asked him how much he earns per month (please note: we are both still students) he said he didn't want to disclose that information. So she said:"Okay... So more than R5000 then." "No!" he replied. She looked at him with fisheyes and said:"More than R10000" and continued to write that down. "I get R2000 a month!!" my boyfriend finally told her after seeing what she wrote down. "Okay..... I'll put down more than R5000." Seriously... I'm not even joking.

  • phindile.zina - 2012-11-01 19:03

358 claimed they're aged between 115 and 120 years of age. No, those people(senior citizens) are too old to remember their real age, let's give them a benefit of the doubt.

  • Rob Nelster - 2014-03-18 21:22

when they got ID books in the 1930`s or 1940`s they could not produce birth certificates and there was a lot of ``estimated`` birthdates, so I would be very surprised that we have 15000+ 100 year olds....... probably as good as that we have reduced hiv babies by 60% down from 24000 to 8.2 hundred (8200 Mr Zuma)
