15 609 people murdered in SA this year

2012-09-20 16:02

Cape Town - The latest crime figures show the actual murder rate dropping marginally, with 331 fewer people killed this year compared to last.

Releasing the annual SA Police Service report on Thursday, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said the murder rate had decrease by 3.1%.

An analysis done by SAPS research task team head Mzwandile Petros showed totals for five of the country's most serious crimes for the period 1 April 2011 to 31 March this year were:

- Murder: 15 609 (previous year 15 940);

- Attempted murder: 14 859 (previous year 15 493);

- Assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm: 192 651 (previous year 198 602);

- Common assault: 181 670 (previous year 185 891); and

- Sexual offences: 64 514 (previous year 66 196).

Mthethwa told journalists over 18 000 people were murdered in the 2004/5 reporting period.

Drinking and drug abuse

"This translates to a 27.6% reduction in murder over an eight-year period," he said.

The minister said an analysis showed almost two-thirds of murders were committed as a result of arguments, fuelled by heavy drinking and drug abuse.

On the decrease in sexual offences, Mthethwa said this was not necessarily a good sign and could point to a trend of under-reporting crimes, such as rape.

"It is influenced by reporting behaviour; if victims trust the police, then you will get more reporting."

He conceded there were difficulties in policing rape and related offences.

"... as government, we still remain concerned about the conviction rate of criminals who commit such crimes," he said.

Re-instating the family violence, child protection, and sexual offences (FCS) units two years ago was helping to ensure more perpetrators were jailed.

"In cases where it involved children under the age of 18, the unit has secured convictions that resulted in a total of 10 345 years [in jail] for those criminals."

For sexual offences against people over 18, 131 life sentences were secured.

  • customdesign - 2012-09-20 16:10

131 life sentences out of 64 514 sexual offences... mmm - I wonder what constitutes an offence and how many of them get to convictions.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-20 16:15

Isn't is just sad when people's loved ones become just another ANC-run statistic...

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-20 16:16

WOW, I feel really safe knowing that only 42.76 people are getting murdered a day compared to 43.67 last year. Thanks ANC.

      customdesign - 2012-09-20 16:18

For sure, but as sick as our society is, any improvement is positive. I think the death penalty would change those statistics drastically though, and we wouldn't have to pay so much for the upkeep of prisons.

      thandiwe.ngema.71 - 2012-09-20 16:23

Our crime stats will have to be verified by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Last year the audit was fine - let's hope this year's is too. What happens is the UN Office check mortuary records, to verify the murders. Read for analysis of crime. Lizette Lancaster will write a report following confirmation from the UN that the stats are accurate. There is probably under-reporting of rape stats from rural areas and cases where car-jackings have been listed as normal robberies. Crime is still unacceptably high. It makes sense that it has fallen a bit as the percentage of people out of work or without welfare has fallen (mainly the latter category as unemployment is static). The ANC need to do a lot more to improve crime. There are areas where it is safe to walk around at night but that is still the EXCEPTION to the rule. Most places are no-go areas at night! I very much doubt the ANC can DELIVER stats that pull the wool in front of the eyes of the United Nations Office on Drugs on Crime.. ie I don't think they are capable enough to hide stats from them.. How many articles will News24 publish that say the same thing?

      christopher.shining - 2012-09-20 16:24

Thats alright, we done well this year around, how many children have been raped then?

      ann.murray.9279 - 2012-09-20 16:25

And this is something to be proud of? It is still 15,609 too many people who have been murdered - sorry that should be shouted from the roof tops - 15,609 MURDERED!!!! In a report from the UK yesterday, two young police officers were lured to a place and murdered - there have only been something in the region of 6 murders over a 22 year period - so do not pride yourselves South African Police Services! You have not got a clue what you are doing!

      hilette - 2012-09-20 16:56

And the rest will be placed in high positions in the anc

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-09-20 17:20

Nothing to be proud of South Africa. And you would think that a figure like that(15609)would put the ANC out of government and make people vote for a competent replacement government.Still year in and year out majority South Africans still vote ANC or 63% of the voting population. Why can't the eletorate decide who best to rule the country based of such stats as these?

      adriaan.delange.94 - 2012-09-20 17:39

And the bigger picture; 70% get medical parool because al of a sudden they are sick. CRIME WILL BE REDUCED BY 50% IF THE DEATH PENALTY ARE BACK!

      gieljam.gomtor - 2012-09-20 17:48

Statistics stay a disgrace and is tantamount of an uncivilized society and constitutes anarchy .Sad story is that the majority of inhabitants feel nothing anybody other than themselves.

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-20 17:52

15 609... are we at war?

      ray.priestley.79 - 2012-09-20 18:31

Every area where "whites" seem to be the majority beneficiaries are recorded eg management positions, education, wealth etc are recorded in racial categories. This does not apply to violent crime eg murder, rape, mugging, hijacking, burglary when occupants are present, farm murders, assault etc 90% of my friends[black, white, coloured,Indian] have been the victims of violent crime-and a lot have left for overseas. In no instance am I aware of the crime being perpetrated by whites or Indians. Most of these crimes have been commited by black/coloured males age 18-35. Surely, these statistics should include such details of the perps[according to victim statements],but will not be,because 99% of them vote for the ANC.

      Madhi - 2012-09-20 20:58

If u consider attempted murder and assault with intentions to do grievous bodily harm which is a cousin of attempted murder then South Africans are on a mass murder, that makes Afghanistan a very peaceful place in comparison and equivalent to Syria in chances of making it for breakfast everyday here. Great country we have.

      rowen.loretz - 2012-09-21 00:42

so if SA's population is 50 million that comes to 1 in every 3203 people per year. Or should we just round it off to the nearest thousand....1 in every 10 000

      strauss.steven - 2012-09-21 05:53

42 murders a day???? some countries doesnt even have 1 a year!!!

  • pierre.walt - 2012-09-20 16:11

How the hell can we believe you..(sing to the known wedding mockery tune)

      jacques.otto.50 - 2012-09-20 17:03

Actualy they split homicide out of murder which adds another 11709 or so. Total it is over 27 000 murders. Check the stats and at the bottom you will see homicide which is defined as itnetion was not to kill but ended up in death. So if people rob your house with a gun and they wanted to steal but ended up murderring you it is a homicide of course not murder. In total 76 people per day killed in violence according to the stats. Highest in the world but of coarse we split homicide so it does not look so bad

      werner.m.strydom - 2012-09-21 12:22

We can't, really. We live in a country where textbooks are dumped to keep the masses stupid, a country where fraudulent individuals like Malema walk free and can blame and shame and do whatever he likes. Not only are the stats (likely) cooked, in the sense that some truths were hidden, but we should also remember these are the murders that we KNOW of - i.e. how many cases of a reported murder and the documents got lost (like them textbooks)? These stats are mostly for propaganda.

      pierre.walt - 2012-09-21 14:52

@Werner. With a wedding it is sung as a joke. With this article it is not meant to be sung as a joke.

  • matt.dibbs.9 - 2012-09-20 16:13

Wow, that’s only an average of 42.76 murders a day WTF!!! Wonder how many farmers were killed? Well done ANC, let's put on our leopard skins, have a dance and a jolly good sing along to congratulate ourselves on how not to run a country!!!!!!

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-20 16:15

The ANC regime is a liberation struggle movement, not a competent government.

      Desilusionada - 2012-09-20 16:49

The people killed on a daily basis, in a so-called non-war society here in SA, is EXACTLY the SAME as THOSE KILLED IN SYRIA DAILY!!!!!!!!!!! Thank f@ck.. we do not have a civil war going on.............

  • ChrisGRoyle - 2012-09-20 16:15

Compare and contrast to England and Wales - with roughly the same population: "The murder rate in England and Wales has fallen from 644 to 619 over the last year to its lowest level for 12 years."

  • evan.connock - 2012-09-20 16:20

So here we have the powers that be gloating about 300 odd less murders this year.... Handshakes all round... BS... Tell this to the family and friends of the deceased before patting ourselves on the back. These stats while no-doubt doctored to look better, are nothing to be proud of. Compare these stats to say UK then you will see just how bad they really are.

  • hermann.hanekom - 2012-09-20 16:22

Overall not bad for a Third World country or are we First World like in the old days?

  • justin.pretorius - 2012-09-20 16:23

Wow, only 15609 people murdered in SA this year!! That is amazing, well done at least it wasn't 16000 (sarcasm)!

  • thethird.wors - 2012-09-20 16:24

nearly 43 per day... that we know of.... LESS PEOPLE DIE IN IRAQ ffs.

      jacques.otto.50 - 2012-09-20 17:04

no include homicide and you have 76 per day

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-20 17:57

jacques, what? homicide is another word for murder...

      jackie.botha.10 - 2012-09-21 08:27

read the article sqeegee. homicide is not included in the murder count because the death wasn't intentional by the burgelar/ hijacker

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-09-20 16:24

Wow over fifteen thousand murdered, Wonder who will be next?? And they are proud of the fact that it was 300 or so less this year, Wake you you idiots. What about the ones that were not reported, and the ones that were released from prison by the Spear, to continue the slaughter of the innocents.

  • sonny.brilliant - 2012-09-20 16:26

It seems that we are a very violent country, which means more people died in South Africa during a peaceful time than during the Iraq war.

15609 murdered is not a good thing at all

  • morris.khunou - 2012-09-20 16:49

Most murders occurs between people who know each other! They dont do it because they want to increase the number of cases of murder in south africa. Most reasons for murder are deeply personal sometimes accidental. We should judge the gov on the arrests made and convictions. My problem is with the sentencing, I think most times is linient.

      rowen.loretz - 2012-09-21 00:34

accidents? Is it an accident when a thug stabs you in the stomach when you walk down a dark street at night for a R2 coin? i thought most murderers do it so they can keep staticians in jobs. You got some strange ideas dude. The only part i agree with you is that sentences are too lenient.

Wow, how comforting. A whole 331 out of 15k plus. Compared to those countries that have a murder rate of like two a year? Maybe if we had the DEATH PENALTY, decent and competent police and a government that cared we wouldn't need to be "comforted" with a 3% drop.

      Joe - 2012-09-20 17:35

you're right, death penalty would bring the number down alot!

We got away with our lives!

  • laurie.searle.9 - 2012-09-20 17:16

15 609 is still to many. My best friends mother was murdered on Saturday. He has locked in syndrome and was heavily dependent on her support. Senseless killings are the order of the day. Our society is very sick and needs urgent help. We can not continue to just blame the past for the present. The blame game does not work. We need action and government must deliver or must be changed.

  • werner.vandermerwe.16 - 2012-09-20 17:16

  • john.lonsdale.5 - 2012-09-20 17:17

Why Mr. Minister of Police have the crime stats for all the farm murders not been reported since 2007???? We also have recently seen an upsurge in murders in Muldersdrift and the elderly being prime targets in general. Being an elderly myself I wonder how much time I have left to live my years out safely in the god forsaken Country we call home.

  • nicholas.lourens - 2012-09-20 17:34

These figures are devastating but Zuma with all his wives unfortunately will replace them in a short period of time. • nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-09-20 17:36

Nettie, you are so right but that would just blow the lid off, so as an earlier comment said they hide those under another title, those would not dare be described as homicide
