Johannesburg - Johannesburg emergency services received 150 emergency phone calls during the night, mostly for assaults, it said on Thursday.

Around 70% of the calls were from people reporting cases of assault, spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said.

The rest were for motor vehicle and fireworks-related accidents.

"In Soweto we had an incident in Meadowlands when a lady in her 40s was injured when fireworks exploded in her face while she was trying to ignite it."

A Soweto man was injured when fireworks exploded in his hand. Both patients were taken to hospital.

In Hillbrow seven cases of assault were reported, and a man jumped from the 12th floor of a building.

"He's alive. We're not sure what the reason was that he jumped."
