Pietermaritzburg - The Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and LifeLine Pietermaritzburg will host a silent protest on Wednesday, to launch the 16 Days of Activism to end violence against women and children.

The event will focus on the trial in Pietermaritzburg of the alleged murderer of Thulile Phungula, who was strangled, dragged into bush and forced to drink acid. She later died of her injuries, but not before identifying her ex-boyfriend as the perpetrator.

On November 18, Siphiwe Mbanjwa, the murder accused, was granted bail.

People joining the protest are invited to wear purple in solidarity and meet outside the public library at noon on November 25.

If you are unable to join, the organisers encourage the public to post Facebook statuses for the day to raise awareness of HIV and gender-based violence, or to tweet, using the hastags #SilentProtestPMB and #BreakTheSilence with @AIDSHealthCareSA.

The objective is to focus attention on the fact that rape and violence against women is a greater epidemic than the statistics provided by the South African Police Services (SAPS) show.

A number of factors, including intimidation of the survivor by the perpetrator, fear of not being believed, of being blamed and shunned, of being interrogated, re-traumatised, labelled and pitied, contribute to the silence of victims.

Statistics in 2013/14 revealed that 66 000 sexual assaults were reported in South Africa. Of these, 6,5% have been successfully prosecuted and less than half of one percent of perpetrators will serve jail time. — Witness Reporter.
