Cape Town – One person died and roughly 400 people left homeless after a fire in Langa which raged into the early hours of Tuesday morning destroyed 159 shacks.

Initially thought to have razed 40 homes and affecting 160 people, Disaster Risk Management officials on Tuesday afternoon confirmed finalised figures following the inferno in Zone 31 on Monday night.

City of Cape Town fire and rescue services spokesperson Theo Layne said crews were on the scene at 22:30.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said emergency sheltering has been activated at a community centre in Zone 23.

"The Mustadafin Foundation will provide humanitarian relief. Various City Services are on scene making assessments, to ensure that basic services are restored," she said.

Kits to allow the residents to rebuild their homes will also be provided.

Layne urged residents to take extra precautions when using cooking and electrical devices during the dry, windy conditions that the city has been experiencing.

"All devices and fires should be monitored at all times," Layne added.
