17 pupils pregnant at NW school

2012-11-22 11:50

Mahikeng - A North West school has asked parents of at least 17 pregnant pupils to be on stand-by in case their daughters go into labour, the Sowetan reported on Thursday.

North West education department spokesperson Bayanda Zenzile told the paper that 17 pupils at Barolong High School in Mahikeng, between the ages of 14 and 18, were pregnant.

Several parents were waiting outside the school, ready to help their daughters should they go into labour. Zenzile said the parents and guardians of the pupils agreed to be on hand.

However, several parents express misgivings as they had to miss work or did not have the skills or resources to help in case their daughters went into labour.

A staff member told the paper that one student had already given birth at the school.

She said pregnancies made the work of teachers more difficult as pregnant pupils might fall asleep during examinations.

its 2012 and teenagers still getting pregnant, they receiving hiv education, sex education..stil having sex with no protection..and i bet those pupils coming from a poor environment..they making it difficult for their parents to feed another mouth..14-18 they must be ashame of themselves.. - 2012-11-22 12:33

@storm ... they do it for the monthly grant ... they live on the money and send the babies to the gogo to raise while they have the next one .... we create a handout society with NO responsibilities

  • charlesglass1895 - 2012-11-22 12:06

I'm guessing this school doesn't have a sex ed class?

      odupreez - 2012-11-22 12:19

Its included completly in a compulsory subject in the current education system, if this subject is failed you do not pass your matric.

Now you cant critisize the Department of Health for distribution condoms at school can you. Kids are bonking each other we have to admit that....

  • ulandi.potgieter - 2012-11-22 12:14

You it is shocking on how children are having children.

  • jenipher.lavender - 2012-11-22 12:15

The problem seems to be getting worse (pregnancies) - not better. Emphasis should be on life skills. It should be compulsory for children of high school age to go through a programme where they are to carry a pretend baby (doll) around with them 24hours a day, logging the time they fed them, bathed, changed them will soon become apparent that having a responsibility of this nature at such a young age is not so fun - even if the grants seem enticing!

      tumisang.kolobe - 2012-11-22 12:21

What a stupid suggestion.....Carrying around a doll will discourage people from making babies?? - 2012-11-22 12:37

Jenipher these girls have NO sense of responsibility because the babies are just passed on to the Gogo to look after and the little tarts carry on with their lives.... very sad

      avuyile.ramncwana.5 - 2012-11-22 12:37

No Tumisang you are the stupid one. What she is talking about is being done in America and studies show it does have a positive effect.Does not take the problem away bt reduces it.

      juan.prinsloo.750 - 2012-11-22 12:52

This is not Europe my dear the dolls will probably get stolen or broken

  • phaldiemeyer - 2012-11-22 12:25

Isn't it obvious that sex education at school is not reducing teenage pregnancies if anything it's spiraling out of can't teach kids about sex and don't expect them to do it at an age where they have no control over their hormones. It's like teaching them how to drive and expect them not to take your car for a joy ride if you not around. It's a big failure, not suprising at was concocted by the anc and its alliance as part of the education curriculum.

      rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-11-22 13:41

phaldiemeyer: whilst hormones may or may not be controlled or influenced. IT IS ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that actions can be. Rather than labelling these idiots as victims of uncontrollable influences they should be held accountable for their decisions and actions. How, sterilisation could be step one!

  • talana.malherbe - 2012-11-22 12:25

I also had a daughter that had a baby while in school but we didn't claim a social grant. All I want to say to these girls, you have plenty of time to have a baby which is such a gift but please try and build a future in which you can provide for yourselv and for that baby before you fall preganant.

      lwandile.sobantu - 2012-11-22 12:35

thats true but our generation is taking that as their status no1 can help on that. i love your comment

  • peejay.maclane - 2012-11-22 12:26

Dumb parents, they are probably to lazy to work and prefer sitting outside school the school gates doing nothing Why not come n fetch ur kids when they r in labor

  • ulandi.potgieter - 2012-11-22 12:29

@ jenipher - I did that in High School carrying a doll around and we had to note down every detail and it scared me to have child while i was in high school knowing i was going to let my parents down. But i take it most of the teenagers feel they to old to be carrying around a doll But as fall as i know the schools in overseas have those dolls that are battery operated and they cry and pee and etc...

      jenipher.lavender - 2012-11-22 12:41

Yes, when i was in school the same happened...carrying a doll around seems silly to some, but heck it reminds you that you are now no longer responsible just for yourself but for 'another' as well! And that's the whole darent palm your 'child' off onto somebody else either...the lesson is, it's your baby, take care of it and if you shouldnt be having it.

      ulandi.potgieter - 2012-11-22 12:58

that's so true on what you said there. they don't realize as well the father of that baby runs after he has had his fun and you sit with it.

      louise.dutoit1 - 2012-11-22 14:26

I agree with the two of you! But unfortunately something just dawned on me why this wont necessarily work for all the children... they have parents and grandparents to look after the babies while they are at school!!! The ADULTS also need to get some sense knocked into them!

  • dudley.mamome - 2012-11-22 12:30

    Cum to Soweto

      tumisang.kolobe - 2012-11-22 12:46

Dear Dudley please note that word "Cum" is a sexual term, meaning to orgasm, this is generally expierienced during an intercourse when a person is expieriencing maximum pleasure!!

      juan.prinsloo.750 - 2012-11-22 12:53

Don't you mean "Come to Soweto"?

  • carolyn.myburgh - 2012-11-22 12:47

I heard on a radio show that some of these young girls get pregnant by older men as a sort of fashion statement, and the older men pay them to buy clothes and such for the baby, is this an explosion of that? All these girls in one school can they not be tested to find the fathers, to get them to take care of their responsibilities?

  • - 2012-11-22 13:05

They could put age restrictions on government grants to treat this symptom, but the fundamental problem runs deeper and beyond one NW school. When God is relegated from a culture people do whatever they see fit because there is no absolute standard.

  • susan.wright.92 - 2012-11-22 13:11

Remove all monetary grants and start issuing coupons or actual mother/care giver is issued with x amount of nappies / clothing/grocery items.Once he actual money is removed from the equation , these young girls will start thinking (hopefully) before they fall pregnant. Also harsher action needs to be taken against the fathers, it takes two to make a baby.Maybe compulsary community service is a starting point?

  • john.morreira.9 - 2012-11-22 13:11

Limits on the number of children, should be imposed. After-all, they do that in China and the ANC government holds The People's Republic of China in such high regard.

  • bongohead.sipho - 2012-11-22 13:32

Our tokoloshe looked into this. The condoms sold in the area were rejects, and thrown in the rubbish bin. A darkie cleaner pulled them out and sold them for 10 cents each. Now you got lovely baby. Shame. Eish

      ulandi.potgieter - 2012-11-22 13:46

not to be funny but you are not allowed to used the wording Darkie any more its fine to say Black person or White person I'm not fighting with you I'm just saying.

  • louise.dutoit1 - 2012-11-22 14:19

PATHETIC!!!! How you can condone pregnant teens by letting them still go to school? When I was in school, if you were pregnant, you had to leave school! That made one think harder about your future!

  • michaela.wilkie - 2012-11-22 14:31

Shocking man ....... don't these kids or parents know that contraception is FREE at government clinics!!!!

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-11-22 14:53

sorry these school girls should be sent home not to return to school until 6 months after their giving birth. Today with free condoms and the pill around there should be no school girl pregnancies. I believe that it is time to punish these girls that fall pregnant and make them sit at home until their child is at least six months old before returning to school. In that they dont to take the pill or use a condom that means they lack responsibility, so send them home and then next time hopefully they will think twice. They are jeapodizing their own future, that of their child. We have seen to many babies abandoned and this is solely because girls do not take preventative options seriously. I believe the grant system is being abused. What country pays their woman to have sex. No only do these girls not care about contacting HIV they are irresponsible and we already have too many unwanted babies in our institutions which is a shame. None of these babies are wanted dumped like dirt. What type of society are we to allow this to happen.

      Khutso Rele Mokgosi - 2012-11-22 15:53

and what exactly would happen to the fathers of these babies?

  • tolo.maano - 2012-11-22 14:58

  • ulandi.potgieter - 2012-11-22 15:03

But you know it takes two to have sex so its also the boys to blame so the boys most do there part as well not only put in and run off.

  • grantwendy.webb - 2012-11-22 15:48

I can't understand why birth controller in the form of the injection can't be given at school? These kids are having sex regardless of knowing they may contract AIDS or multiply, they simply don't care or have the will power to keep their pants on! However on a positive note at least they are getting an education regardless of the fact they are pregnant! In my day if a girl were to fall pregnant, MOSTLY they simply left school and never got an education.

  • ekhiba - 2012-11-22 15:58

The last 3 months of pregnancy is criticall. do not allow those kids in that stage to attend school(risk are high, teachers do not have skill for this type of thing). Stay for one year with baby and continue school

This is SO sad for the baby and the mother of the infant, the fathers should be charged with statuary rape, these are babies having babies. Were they raped? is it within the family? surely kids this age having babies the situation should be investigated. Their bodies are not ready to give birth.
