Johannesburg - Scores of children freed themselves from the remains of their bus by climbing out through the buses shattered windows, paramedics said on Wednesday.

The bus had rolled in Sunbury, Mpumalanga, leaving at least 18 children injured, said ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

"Its roof had collapsed and the doors and windows were broken. There was a lot of debris around the bus.

"The young children had apparently climbed out themselves through door and window openings," said Bodasing.

The children had sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further medical care.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

Last week, 3-year-old twin sisters were killed when their school bus caught fire in the Free State between Warden and Harrismith.

About 19 other children were injured, including the twins' 10-year-old sister who sustained severe burns to her face, trying to rescue her siblings from the blaze.

Provincial education department spokesperson Howard Ndaba said the accident happened after the bus driver reportedly failed to apply the brakes after a terrible smell from the engine.

The driver was reported to have jumped out of the bus before it came to a standstill.
