Cape Town - Eighteen foreign nationals without proper documentation were arrested on the N12 freeway in Benoni on Saturday morning.

Equestrian Unit members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spotted a vehicle “cramped with passengers in the goods compartment” while on patrol at around 08:00, spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said in a statement.

The vehicle was pulled over and it was found that the passengers did not have the required paperwork, proving they were in the country legally.

“Seventeen males and one female [aged] between 17 and 40 from Mozambique and Zimbabwe were [booked in and] charged at the Benoni police station for being in the country without proper documentation,” he said.

The 18 suspects are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
