Two young men who stabbed another to death because he had assaulted and abused his girlfriend, were each jailed for 18 years by a high court judge on Wednesday.

Judge Trevor Gorven said the murder of Linda Mlangeni of Sweetwaters by Andile Madlala (24) and Thembelani Nyawose (20), was a “vicious, unprovoked attack”.

He said at the time of the murder Mlangeni had been in bed and asleep.

The court heard evidence that while Madlala, his girlfriend and Nyawose were sitting and drinking alcohol on the night of March 16 last year, Mlangeni’s girlfriend, Nobuhle Mngadi had arrived there. Her face was swollen and she told the trio that she had had an argument with Mlangeni and that he had assaulted her.

Judge Gorven said Mlangeni was subsequently “lured” out of his house under a pretext of making good what had happened with Mngadi.

“The two of you were lying in wait for him and you attacked him and stabbed him on 17 occasions. The stab wounds penetrated the trachea, both lungs and his heart,” said the Judge.

Judge Gorven said a mitigating factor in the case was the fact that it was clear that Mlangeni had assaulted and abused his initimate partner, Mngadi, and said this was “something that happens far too often in society and also has to be stamped out”.

However no one was allowed to take the law into their own hands.

He said while this was the motive for the killing it was “not justification”. Mlangeni’s murder had left his two young children without their father.
