19 new political parties registered

2013-10-02 18:36

Johannesburg - Nineteen new political parties have been registered on a national level with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over the past nine months.

Prominent among this group are Mamphela Ramphele's Agang SA, Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters, and the Workers and Socialist Party.

The lesser-known parties include the Lekgotla for Democracy Advancement, the International Revelation Congress (IRC), and the Poelano Revelation Party.

All these are contesting next year's national elections and hoping for seats in Parliament.

Kokoloti Mametja, leader of Lekgotla, on Wednesday said South Africans were "wising up" and realising the ANC was not delivering.

"In this country... we are in very, very big trouble. As a public servant I know that," he told Sapa.

"A lot of South Africans are wising up (sic)."

Mametja, a former African National Congress member, worked in the Gauteng local government department. He resigned from his job in August this year.

He said the "wheels started coming off" for the ANC in the early 2000s when nepotism, corruption, and cadre deployment surfaced. Lekgotla was started in 2011 as a civil rights organisation.

"We went into the communities and initiated dialogue over the past three years. You need to find a greater objective and ours is service to the people."

Not listening

Mametja said current leaders and politicians were not listening to the people.

"We are going to speak the language of ethics, the language of good governance. Good governance can't take a back seat, it needs to be the national agenda."

He said a membership audit had not been conducted yet, but that the party had a presence in the provinces. The party, which was launched in July, would start campaigning in October.

"We might be operating at a low budget but there is nothing stopping us. We are a functioning political party right now. We don't have an organisation which is groping in the dark. We are actually ready," Mametja said.

The IRC's Thinawanga Mammba said he started the party because the ANC was not doing anything for the people.

"When the ruling party came in they said they will unite all South Africans, but they are dividing people. They did not fulfil their promises."

Mammba, who claimed to be a former National Union of Metalworkers of SA shop steward, said no one should still be living in a shack without electricity or running water.

He claimed the IRC had 34 000 members so far and was strong in Limpopo.

Political butterfly Philemon Sadick, who fluttered from one party to the other, registered the Poelano Revelation Party in March.

During apartheid Sadick said he campaigned for the ANC, but when the party came into power he decided to join the National Party to try to "neutralise" its image.

Battling

However, when the NP decided to merge with the ANC Sadick left the party.

"I decided to leave it and join the Democratic Alliance. The Democratic Alliance was not nice for me so I decided to go and learn more about the ANC and I became again a member of the ANC until I registered this party," he explained.

Sadick said he was focusing on getting a seat in Parliament so he could "lay matters on the table".

"My problem is poverty is fluctuating in rural areas and government is not supporting emerging farmers and emerging business people. Crime is my problem, and xenophobia, and drugs."

Sadick said his party had about 2000 registered members and he was battling with funding.

Other political parties registered this year are: the Bolsheviks Party of SA, Direct Democracy Forum, First Indigenous Nations Civic Association of SA, the Nationalist Coloured Party, the Nehemiah Liberation Christian Party, People's Party of SA, Security Workers Political Party, SA People's Party, True Freedom Party, Ubumbano Lwesizwe Sabangoni, and the United Congress.

      Grant Montgomery - 2013-10-02 20:22

Like him or loathe him we'll still be seeing a lot of Ju-Ju. Let's face it, there's a lot of him to see!

  • Anton Kamp - 2013-10-02 18:46

. Just one party, the ANC, gets 65 % The rest can get the balance !!!

      Ritz40 - 2013-10-02 19:03

Whahaha Anthony you are just as bug a fake as your beloved ANC!!

      Jaco de Beer - 2013-10-02 20:09

True as I have no faith in the so called IEC!

      Grant Montgomery - 2013-10-02 20:37

leonardb1. That was my first thought but then I thought that people supporting these new parties are disenchanted ANC former supporters who would otherwise just not vote. All the info they've had access to has taught them that a vote for the DA or Agang will cost them their monthly grants (why take the risk?)

      Anton Kamp - 2013-10-02 20:38

@ Jaco, That's my man, lets start blaming the IEC now, for the 'da club' getting less than 15 % of the vote!!!

      Godfrey Welman - 2013-10-02 21:06

@Anton..how else will the ANC get 65% with so many of its supporters leaving them...do explain

      Anton Kamp - 2013-10-02 21:19

@ Godfrey, """with so many of its supporters leaving them...""" But, WHO says so ?? It is ONLY these 'happy clappy da club' supporters, that KEEP saying so! I suppose its; "if you hear it long enough, you start to believe it" But, one takes Soweto, Africa's largest city, the transformation under management of the ANC, has been amazing! WHY would the average Soweto resident vote or anyone besides the ANC !!

      Rudi Smith - 2013-10-02 22:45

F#ck the ANC! go DA and AgangSA!!

  • Sthembiso Jali - 2013-10-02 18:50

Very soon the ballot papers will consists of 10 to 15 pages. Wait mine is on the way- Zulu revelation party (ZRP).

      Ritz40 - 2013-10-02 19:03

Me to Zulu Country Club (ZCC)

      Grant Montgomery - 2013-10-02 20:45

I googled SA political parties earlier. There are dozens that contested previous election and now no longer operate. Good luck with your new party - do I have to be Zulu to join?

  • Sizwe Sithebe - 2013-10-02 18:52

They can register their political parties up until 100 if they like, but what I'm sure of is that, the ANC will still win and govern dis country 4 many yrs 2 come

      Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 19:56

No doubt you are, Sizwe. Your use of SMS language, OH SO COOL, confirms that. But let's wait and see, shall we?

      Jaco de Beer - 2013-10-02 20:13

      Fraudulently so . . . .

      Bolsheviks Partysa - 2013-10-02 19:28

When a ship is sinking and I have an alternative to jump, I will. Its a new day in South Africa. Sadly that's what many voters may not realize today in South Africa.  The problem is, when one benefits financial through their connections in the ANC, it's normal to be defensive, obviously they will not be objective about the reality that ANC as a ship, and ANC National State leadership, and South Africa as ship are all sinking.  At worse many voters think government's money is ANC money. They think that what the government does for the society is actually ANC doing it.  They are ignorant or oblivious that in essence it is tax payers money, YOUR money, which is budgeted and allocated to perform certain tasks, of which largely ANC deployed cadres misuse it in Elias Motsoaledi. They are made to believe that they owe allegiance to the ANC not South Africa.   To all those who are blindly loyal to the ANC in Moutse, I am not criticizing ANC OUT OF SPITE, or Opposition, I am simply saying, every power structure comes a time or season for its cal-de-sec, this is a historical fact.  Even in old democracies, no political party hold power like monarchy, they always change the ruling party, hence we see them as world class nations. Beside ANC is at its best when is in opposition. Let's make a South African 2014 revolution, and make ANC an opposition party in Sekhukhune.    There are three  major signs that ANC has reach a dead end:1) Their in-fights for power with nor proper hegemony due to its broad church culture, 2) The high degree of disjuncture between conference resolutions, election manifestos, and State organisations, which has show in poor service delivery. 3) The lack of leadership on community levels, and the separation with its motive force.  As a result ANC has tended to be the party for elections, and maintain state power.  It is above reasons among others, that my conscience forbid me to waste my vote by voting ANC. The question is, are you going to waste your vote in 2014 by voting these old political parties which failed you dismally?       The dispensation of Bolsheviks Party of South África marks a new beginning for reconsidering, reconciling, rebuilding, restructuring, reinforcing South Africa of our dreams, that is"South Africa a Love Driven Nation".    The advantage is, it does not come with the baggage of the past, it is not patriarchal, it seeks to change the current economic structure, the focus being constructiveness, competence, creativity, cooperation, complements and good conduct. It is hard to say goodbye but a man has to do, what a man has to do, goodbye ANC.  I AM ASKING YOU TO JUMP WITH ME INTO Bolsheviks Party of South África SHIP, DON'T ALLOW YOURSELF TO DRAWN WITH A SINKING ANC SHIP!

      Ol Mabaso - 2013-10-02 19:46

Bolshoy... I repeat. Its plagiarism. Your party needs to change the name OR Russian (real) Bolsheviks will take you to one of the International Courts for ''stealing'' their intellectual property,,,

      Malale Eve Va - 2013-10-02 19:55

@Bolshevik Party Anastas Mikoyan once said of one of the Russian Bolshevik Party's stalwarts..."He is a mountain eagle without fear, who boldy leads the Bolshevik Party on unexplored roads"...I expect you to be a living testimony to those wise words...Long Live the Bolshevik Party of SA Long Live!!

      Malale Eve Va - 2013-10-02 19:59

@ Ol Mabaso you rant is out of nothing but jealousy...you're feeling threatened by the existence of the Bolshevik Party. Its far different and more relevant to the Mickey mouses who call themselves Anc & Eff...Long Live Bolshevik Party...

      Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 20:04

Bolshevics Partysa, what a valiant effort. What you say about the ANC is absolutely true. However -- the answers in 1917 Russia (which threw the Russian people into a hell lasting nearly a century so far) are most definitely NOT the answers for today's SA. Rather look at AgangSa, COPE, the UDM -- even the DA, if you have the courage -- but the answer most certainly does NOT lie in failed ideologies of the past.

      Lawrice Sven Griffin - 2013-10-02 20:13

im confused, which party gives the free shopping vouchers?

      Malale Eve Va - 2013-10-02 20:27

@Jurie I hope SA Bolshevik Party will take that as a learning curve.I for one will vote for any one who is very clear on the issues surrounding;the death penalty and border patrol/immigration(we've got too many illegals here)...not forgetting our pathetic foreign policy.Last election I gave my vote to DA,but they're very cagey when it comes to those issues.I hope there's a political party that will be brave enough to tackle those issues head on.

      Armstrong Dreadnaught - 2013-10-02 20:35

@Bolsheviks Partysa - I have sailed with Russian/Ukrainian crews for the last 13 years. Not ONE wants to go back to the old USSR communist days! They had a VERY hard time in the USSR. They know what suffering is. Do not even think of going communist. Vote DA.

      Nico de Jongh - 2013-10-02 21:36

Wising up is when people are fun loving, hard working and honest people first and politics becomes a mere back ground 'hum' i.e. the government DELIVER ! ! Some green party like PPPEOPLE..Party! people party! eff off politics. live easy.

      Ol Mabaso - 2013-10-03 04:16

Malale? Am really surprised by your assumption that I v got so moved by your essay and now am green with jealousy. Please, allow me to remind you that Assumption is a Mother of all f ups. Another little thing - Bolsheviks means a Party of Majority. Not your project. But...minus One vote from anc...ok!

      Malale Eve Va - 2013-10-03 06:10

@ Ol take what I said with a pinch of salt...inspite of our difference in ideologies (with the exception of political careerists) we all want the best for SA,and our future generations...however we need to be very careful about who we put in power.People are tired of havin their feelings played with.

      the one from IEC party?

      Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 20:08

There is no IEC party -- or are you being sarcastic? Blacky, you make a good point. Two, in fact. I am extremely concerned about the IEC losing its case over the Tlokwe independent candidates issue -- clearly, the IEC had sided with the ANC against the independents. That worries me -- how independent IS the IEC?

  • Samuel Masenzo Mohale - 2013-10-02 18:58

  • Ephraim Le-Nation - 2013-10-02 19:16

truth be told, the purpose creating a political party in south Africa is for monetary gain and nothing else. if you can't get a job why not create few jobs by coming up with a weak political structure with an intention of getting paid by government?

      Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 20:19

Ephraim, just registering a political party does not guarantee you a seat in Parliament. In fact, you have to gain more than a minimum threshold of votes, otherwise you lose the deposit you paid upon registering. Admittedly, I'm quoting the pre-1994 rules. Somebody may well correct me -- nowadays anybloodything goes.

While one has been kept busy with little insignificant parties like the 'da' one has 'forgotten about the youth! Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 20:24

It is an historical thing, my friend. South Africans traditionally don't stand together -- they split up. That is the major danger facing the ANC, and I for one now appreciate this contrary innate tendency in us.

      Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 20:29

Xolani, that is your right, and also the right of your family and friends. Rats also have the right to go down with a sinking ship -- but they are famous for abandoning a sinking ship. Because they follow their heads, not their hearts. Now, Xolani, are you, your family and your friends more, or less wise than rats?

      Joe Galo - 2013-10-02 20:43

Comparing people to Rats is a disgrasfull idiology, why is that when people choose their own political party others seemed to be heart by it........you choose your own party and elect who ever you want and live other people with their own choices.....if you want to convince people to not to vote for the ANC, get off that office chair and head for the street and campaign......

      Dde Gov - 2013-10-02 21:33

Joe, look at the history of the ANC rule and ask yourselves, honestly why do you continue to vote for a party that has such a dismal track record. Surely its not in yours and the country's best interest to continue bringing a corrupt party to power. The people that vote for other parties show that they are not sheep (just following NOT leading)

      Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 21:40

Good try, Joe, but not good enough. If you can produce a better comparison within this discussion, please do.

      Jurie Nel - 2013-10-02 21:42

Well I honestly think its the only way ANC will see that they are tearing this country apart, and how our economy is deteriorating due to the mischiefs of the Leading party! If 19 new political parties is what it takes to get rid of the leading party then ... Thumbs up .they should have delivered their promises instead of positions of power taking control of them .

  • Moss Kop - 2013-10-03 01:55

  • Tyson Mamorobela - 2013-10-03 08:48

this multi_party system should at least have a member threshold before IEC registration, say around 35 000, otherwise we are just neutralising the popular votes.

      Tyson Mamorobela - 2013-10-03 08:54

actually by 35 000 I'm hedging it, 500 000 is more in the ball_park. that should narrow people's choices to about 10.
