Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal private security company owner shot and wounded two armed robbers moments after they allegedly held up a mother and daughter in their Durban home on Thursday.

Reaction Unit South Africa head Prem Balram said he received a call from a resident in Himalaya Drive, Verulam, who told him he suspected his 65-year-old mother and 17-year-old daughter were in the middle of an armed robbery at their home.

"He said his daughter had spoken to him uncharacteristically softly. I went to the home and as I got to the property, I noticed a car coming out from the back with a male driver. He immediately shot about 10 rounds at me."

He returned fire, shooting through his windscreen and hitting the driver in the face and chest.

"He ran up a nearby bank and collapsed. A second suspect in the back seat opened fire at me, firing around 25 rounds.

"I shot the car 35 times. The second suspect sustained injuries and was apprehended, together with a third suspect. The items that were stolen have been recovered. The car they used was stolen in a hijacking in Newlands earlier this month."

Balram said the man shot in the face was in a critical condition in hospital.
