Bloemfontein - Two men were arrested in connection with the murder of a retired academic in Clarens in the Free State, police said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Sergeant Majang Skalkie said the two men were arrested within an hour of each other in Botshabelo and Bloemfontein early on Monday morning.

The body of Daan Wybenga, 69, was found with his hands and feet bound lying in his bathroom at his house in Clarens last week Monday.

Skalkie said police suspected that he was strangled.

Volksblad newspaper reported that Wybenga was a retired professor of the North West University who lived alone in Clarens.

Skalkie said Wybenga’s Toyota Corolla, cellphone and music system were stolen during the robbery.

Both men would appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate's Court soon on charges of house robbery, murder and theft of a motor vehicle.
