Johannesburg - Two men were arrested on Wednesday in connection with a shootout in Alexandra township in Johannesburg, the city's metro police said.

"They were arrested by members of the SA Police Service," said spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.

She said the first man arrested was believed to have been the driver of a getaway car.

A second man was arrested shortly afterwards.

"The third suspect is still at large; he is apparently in a taxi, trying to get to another province."

A Johannesburg metro police officer was wounded in the shooting.

The metro policeman and a colleague came under fire from robbers at Pan Africa in the township, near the Marlboro Gautrain station.

The robbers had pulled up next to the metro police in a car and ordered the officers to give them their guns.

They fled after wounding the officer in the arm and waist.
