Johannesburg - Two boys have sustained injuries after a bullet which ricocheted off the floor of a shop in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, hit them in the leg and arm respectively, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Sunday.

"Allegations are that the security was unsafely meddling with the firearm in the shop," spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said.

"The bullet that discharged accidentally ricocheted from the floor tiles which cracked and sent shrapnel flying, injuring a foot of a 15-year-old as well as the hand of a 12-year-old boy."

Kgasago said the 40-year-old Congolese national did not have proper immigration documentations nor did he have a permit for the firearm. He told police he was employed by a company called SI Security which had its head offices in Sandton.

He was arrested and taken away from members of the community who were angered by his negligence, Kgasago said.

"Members of the community were baying for the security officer's blood with the intention of lynching him.

"Fortunately, members of EMPD public order policing were alerted and quelled the situation."

The man is expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of discharging a firearm in a municipal area as well as carrying a firearm without a valid permit, Kgasago said.

The two boys were taken to a nearby clinic for further treatment, he said.
