Polokwane – Two suspected robbers were burnt to death and two others were injured in Ga-Kgwete near Mecklenburg in Limpopo on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said residents launched a manhunt for suspects who fled in two cars after a businessman was attacked and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and airtime.

"Members of the community then mobilised and followed them and during that process, the suspects shot two community members, but this did not stop the pursuit," said Ngoepe.

He said the suspects were subsequently caught on a mountain.

"They were then assaulted and two of them were burnt to death."

Mob justice condemned

Ngoepe said two others are being treated in hospital for serious injuries sustained during the assault.

Two counts of attempted murder and two counts of murder have been opened for investigation.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned mob justice and called for residents to stop taking the law into their own hands.

"We are calling on all community members to desist from acts of vigilantism and so-called mob justice," said Ledwaba.

He warned that police would act mercilessly against anyone who participates in the violent acts.

Mob justice in Limpopo has been spreading in villages as residents vent their anger on alleged criminals.
