2 bust for dagga in Johannesburg CBD

2013-01-07 11:44

Johannesburg - Two men who were arrested for dealing dagga will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said the two, aged 23 and 30, were arrested at the corner of Banket and Plein Streets in Johannesburg on Saturday.

He said police were patrolling the area when they saw a "suspicious" man and searched him.

"Police recovered a plastic [bag] with dagga and he took the police [to] where he bought it," Mbele said.

"Police found a dustbin with four plastic [bags] full of dagga weighing 17kg."

The drugs had an estimated street value of about R35 000.

Why did u arrest them?whose goin to take all that pot? Obama legalized that thing long time ago. S.A u need to catch up.

      docnoo.boddy - 2013-01-07 13:49

Here is a perfect argument for legalisation. They make a bust worth R35,000, in order to jail these guys till they can appear in court, then the cost of a trial, then the inevitable incarceration is probably going to cost the state over a million rand by the time they are released. At that point they will have gone from petty criminals to hardened ones most likely with AIDS which the government then has an obligation to provide medical and ongoing care. If the weed could be purchased legitimately and the government levied a 40% tax then not only would they save themselves millions but the would have R15.000 in taxes which would go back into the economy. The Americans know only too well the cost of criminalising it and the futility of fighting weed use. Someone in government please take a stand.

      gideon.walt - 2013-01-07 13:14

Someone needs to deal for someone to use recreationally......catch 22 hey boet

      vambozha.mutemi.9 - 2013-01-07 14:11

i think i would need to go to a market to buy tomatoes for personal use! so why close the market?

  • boramk - 2013-01-07 12:16

Have they caught the rapists and murderers or is pot higher on our agenda?

      george.frangs - 2013-01-10 12:40

Idiot, the cops were patrolling and saw the guy being dodgy. Did you even read the article or has all those bong hits messed up your comprehension skills??

  • brendon.nel.7 - 2013-01-07 12:21

Are there not enough real criminals to catch or something?

      george.frangs - 2013-01-10 12:40

      ^see above...^

  • kenneth.fisher.750 - 2013-01-07 12:26

How many rapists and murderers aren't on some banned substance? So yeah, every little arrest helps

      zane.zeiler - 2013-01-07 13:15

That's funny cause the latest statistics on drug related crimes show that most violent crimes (robbery, rape & murder) are committed under the influence of benzodiazepines and alcohol (all legal substances). Go ask any policeman if he/she has ever witnessed a violent pothead and chances are that the answer would be "heck, now that I think of it, no." Also ask any medical professional if they've ever seen a case of violence or a death associated with cannabis and you'd get the same answer. Now go ask these same people the same question about alcohol and the answer would be "all the time!".

      sachasea - 2013-01-08 10:30

Kenneth - Are you insinuating that the substances are to blame for these peoples appalling behaviour and the crimes that they commit against others? Don't be silly man, drugs or not, these people are going to commit their crimes. Lay the blame where it is due. The fact that we keep these substances in the black market where they associate with criminals and gangsters doesn't help the situation.

They confiscate it and a lot of police officer will smoke it BUT please do not give ZUMA any as this man is thinking of getting married again???? - this stuff makes a person rather "frisky" - He does not need it as i am sure he has boxes of Viagra - Alcohol causes more damage than dagga. Mixing the two is lethal so dagga should be smoked in moderation andbe legalised, especially for cancer patients - many countries are allowed to have a certain amount for recreation use and then cancer patients get a prescription from their doctors to treat the awful after affects of this dreadful decease cancer!!

  • rob.bayliss.94 - 2013-01-07 12:41

Smoke what you want...BUT Pay premium Medical Aid rates or introduce exclusions to allow for the long term negative effects of over-indulgence. Introduce and enforce laws to penalise driving under the influence (or any other objectionable/illegal/antisocial public behaviour). In other words by all means freedom of choice just so long as individuals are held accountable for the outcomes of their decisions.

      george.frangs - 2013-01-10 12:42

Hmmm, that might just potato... Lol, seriously though, thats not a bad idea.

  • msika.bopha.9 - 2013-01-07 13:44

Hang them!! That stuff is not good. Smoked it the other day, and the next day when I woke up I couldn't remember how I drove myself home. Alcohol is way better than dagga, hence comsumption of the former is still legal.

      phae.rayden - 2013-01-07 13:51

People like you should be hanged, not the dealers. You're an @ss for driving drunk or stoned, and your logic is atrocious.

      msika.bopha.9 - 2013-01-07 14:13

Agreed! I should be hanged together with the dealers. But I learnt from it, I was lucky not be involved in an accident and get myself or other innocent poeple injured or killed. I vowed never to do it again.

      vambozha.mutemi.9 - 2013-01-07 14:19

ha ha ha u smoked the wrong brand dude

      Dougir - 2013-01-07 15:43

Im guessing that you were drinking as well, how do you know that it was not the booze that made you forget and what idiot drives drunk and stoned anyway.....hang yourself

      george.frangs - 2013-01-10 12:43

      Stop feeding the Troll guys!!

  • israel.maseko.5 - 2013-01-07 13:47

What about cops that are smoking dagga?

      vambozha.mutemi.9 - 2013-01-07 14:19

      they do their job better

  • fred.potgieter.92 - 2013-01-08 08:06

Cops wasting their time and tax payers money. Legalize it and control it. It's a "soft" drug, like alcohol. The cops have better things to do. We have a real serious crime problem in this country.

      jaded.oldfart - 2013-01-08 18:42

alcohol isn't "soft" - it's addictive, harmful to your own and your family's health and well-being, and infinitely more dangerous to society. but you're right about legalization and control :-)

      george.frangs - 2013-01-10 12:44

Alchohol is WAY worse than weed. How many weed related deaths did you hear about over the festive season? Besides, it would be better to decriminalise it.

  • Michael Hawthorne - 2013-01-08 10:53

Another two innocent people's lives will be ruined.

  • joben.jobes - 2013-01-10 12:47

My condolences go out to the two that were caught.
