2 Cape Town traffic cops shot

2016-07-05 13:32

Cape Town - Two female traffic officers were shot and wounded in Khayelitsha on Tuesday, a City of Cape Town official said.

One of the provincial officers was shot in the arm, and the other in the stomach, said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security.

The women were rushed to hospital for treatment. Officials were trying to find out what had led to the shooting.

Byron La Hoe, spokesperson for the department of transport in the province, said the officers were doing routine patrols in Harare section when a Toyota Avanza suddenly drove up and shots were fired at them.

"We condemn this incident in the strongest possible terms," said La Hoe.

"We call on members of the public to come forward with information that may assist the police to identify and arrest the perpetrators," he said.

"It is unacceptable that hardworking officials should be targeted in this manner as they execute their duties."

Two suspects are being sought and anybody with information on their whereabouts can contact the police on 021-812-4581.

La Hoe said the officers and their families were in their thoughts and prayers, and that the rest of the traffic police were on the lookout for potential danger.
