Durban - Two children were killed and five other people were injured after a truck overturned on the R612 at Sawoti, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said on Tuesday.

In a separate incident, five people, including children aged one and four, were injured after being hit by a runaway car on the R618 near the town of Hlabisa, in the Umkhanyakude district of KwaZulu-Natal, earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

The pedestrians were walking near the road when they were reportedly struck by the vehicle, which allegedly veered off the road before strking them, Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said.

"A woman and her one-year-old baby, who had been on her back, sustained critical injuries, while a four-year-old girl has sustained serious injuries," McKenzie said.

They were transported to hospital.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
