Two men have reportedly been killed in the escalating violence between taxi drivers and foreign nationals in Pienaarsdorp, Klerksdorp.

According to an IOL report, police said the two men had been killed in separate incidents on Sunday in the wake of apparent clashes between taxi drivers and foreign nationals in the North West town.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone told IOL that the body of a man was found on the street on Sunday morning. He was believed to be a taxi driver.

"It is alleged that an unconfirmed number of taxi drivers grouped themselves later in a bid to avenge the death of their colleague, whom they suspect to have been killed by a foreign national."

OFM reported that police further confirmed a foreign national had been stabbed to death later on Sunday. Stalls at the local taxi rank were also set on fire.

Police had been deployed to restore calm to the area.

No arrests have been made yet, but two separate cases of murder have been opened and investigations are ongoing.
