2 dead in blast near Johannesburg Prison

Cape Town - Two people were killed, and 15 injured after an explosive device was triggered on a vehicle transporting prisoners to Johannesburg Central Prison, reports said on Monday.

Eye Witness News reported 36 prisoners were on board the vehicle which was on the way back from court.

The bomb was apparently triggered inside the vehicle, and detonated inside the prison precinct, according to the SABC.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malile confirmed to Sapa that there had been an explosion outside the prison but said he was unable to give more details immediately.

Two prisoners escaped after the incident, but were re-arrested.

EWN reported that injured prisoners have been taken to various hospitals, and are under police guard.

The inmate who were unhurt were taken back to the prison.
