Durban – Two elderly people were burnt beyond recognition when a shack caught fire while they were asleep in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said Tongaat police are investigating an inquest docket after a woman, 62, and a man, 59, burnt to death at an informal settlement on Gugulethu Road on Sunday night.

Ethekwini firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze and recovered the badly burnt bodies of the deceased after the fire had spread to two other shacks.

The cause of the fire that engulfed the shack of the deceased is unknown at this stage, Zwane said.

It was not immediately clear whether the deceased were a couple or not.
