Bloemfontein - Two teenage boys have appeared in the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court after they allegedly hijacked and killed a man who had offered them a lift, Free State police said on Tuesday.

The driver of a red Toyota Tazz picked up the two, aged 16 and 18, outside Steynsrus on June 29, Sergeant Ian Gaobepe said.

"Along the way, just outside Kroonstad, they asked him to stop and he was allegedly shot and left to die on the side of the road."

A passer-by found the owner’s decomposing body a few days later.

Gaobepe said the firearm used to commit the murder allegedly belonged to the stepfather of one of the boys. They were arrested last Wednesday, when they tried to sell the car in the North West. The potential buyer called police.

They appeared in court on Friday. The 16-year-old was released into his parents’ care, while the 18-year-old would remain in custody until their next appearance this Friday.
